Shinyribs defies genres as
a sonic melting pot of
Texas blues, New Orleans R&B funk, horn driven Memphis soul, country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock. The Austin based nine-piece supergroup is led by
Kevin Russell, the charismatic frontman with colorful suits and extravagant shoes who continuously swaps out an electric guitar for a ukulele and never falls short of creating a cinematic experience with on stage antics that often include him donning a light-up cloak or leading a conga line through the crowd. The Swampadelic R&B nine-piece outfit was named Best Austin Band at the Austin Chronicle’s Austin Music Awards (2017, 2018) and awarded Album of the Year for “I Got Your Medicine” (2017). Russell’s
Shinyribs have recorded seven albums: 2010’s “Well After Awhile;” “Gulf Coast Museum” (2013); “Okra Candy” (2015); 2017’s award-winning “I Got Your Medicine;” a compilation of holiday standards and new compositions “The Kringle Tingle” (2018); the soulful “Fog & Bling” (2019); and the most recent project,...  More >>

Empty Bowls Project

Empty Bowls Project

The concept for “Empty Bowls” started in the early 90’s with Bloomfield Hills, Michigan high school students and their art teacher, John Hartom. In an effort to help out with the local food drive they threw, decorated and fired 120 bowls. The school’s staff was invited to the cafeteria to select a bowl and enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread. John and his wife, Lisa Blackburn, talked to the staff about hunger in their community, thanked them for their cash donations and then asked them to take their bowls home with them as a reminder of those with empty bowls. There are now “Empty Bowls” projects all over the world.

In 2015 Winfield Art & Humanities Council held it's first Empty Bowls dinner at Grace United Methodist Church and $3,000 was raised and donated to the Winfield Food Pantry.  Intereset has grown and it is now being held at Baden Square Community Center the last few years.  This year it is on November 8th at 700 Gary St. from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants may purchase a custom designed bowl by local artists for $15 each or 2 for $25, and dine on the wide variety of soups donated by fine local restaurants .

Observing covid safety protocols, seating will be limited, but carry-out will be available.

All profits benefit the Winfield Food Pantry.

The empty bowls serve as reminders of those with empty bowls in the world and in our area.

Set-Up Day for Winfield Isle of Lights

Set-Up Day for Winfield Isle of Lights

Volunteers Needed to Set Up Winfield Isle of Lights

The Winfield Isle of Lights board is preparing for the 30th year of lighting up Winfield’s beautiful Island Park over the holidays. The display is set to open on Sunday, November 20th and stay open nightly from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated. It will remain open nightly until Dec. 30, 2022.

Volunteers are needed to help set up displays on Tuesday, November 15th. Two shifts are available for sign-up – 8:00 am to Noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Lunch will be provided by Ranch House Catering.

Volunteering is easy and no experience is necessary.  New volunteers will be paired with experienced volunteers.  A few basic tools are helpful, but not necessary: needle nose pliers, an adjustable wrench, open end or ratchet wrench (1/2 in & 9/16 in), a hammer or mallet & work gloves. Dress for the weather, layers works best as the day usually warms up a bit.

Those interested in volunteering can sign up for shifts online. A link to sign up is available at www.isleoflights.org. If you have questions, you may contact Megan Beeson at 620.221.2420.
