POP awards $22,075 to local
organizations
Cowley County, KS: Power of the Purse (POP) presented grants totaling $22,075
to seven local nonprofit organizations in 2021. Power of the Purse is an
organization of women who donate annually for a fund supporting projects to
benefit women and children in our Cowley County community.
Organizations
receiving support include Angels in the Attic, Ark City Public Library, Cowley
House of Hope, Cowley Cares Coalition, Elevate Cowley County, REACH, and
Soroptimist International of Arkansas City.
Angels in the
Attic ($2,000). Warm Coats/Happy Hearts. Families meet with a
representative of Angels in the Attic at Wal-Mart for coat purchases.
Single mothers and teenage children are given gift cards to use at Factory
Connection. Angels in the Attic cooperates with the Arkansas City Kiwanis
and several other private donors help with hats, gloves and scarves.
Arkansas City Public Library (ACPL) ($2,500).
ACPL will partner with the newly forming LoveNJoy Girls Group to install a
Storywalk at Lovie Watson Park. A Storywalk is an outdoor reading
experience where a children’s book is placed in a permanent display along a
walking trail.
Cowley House of Hope ($2,960) Cowley House
of Hope provides short-term cold-weather care for women and children stranded
in our county or threatened by a domestic circumstance to ensure they will not
be left out in the cold or placed at risk in any other way.
Cowley Cares
Coalition Fund ($6,600) This fund was created to assist single mothers who
are actively working to improve their lives and the lives of their
children. Research shows caring for a mother reflects care to the
children, families and ultimately improves entire communities. The Cowley
Cares Coalition assistance encourages participants to be self-sufficient and
productive members of the community. Eagle Nest, Inc. while working in
cooperation with other local agencies administers the fund.
Elevate Cowley
County ($3,000) This project continues the work of helping families
overcome poverty. Awarded funds will be used to support the next class
and provide an emergency fund.
REACH ($2,015)
Funding will create a lending library of communication (voice output) devices
for toddlers with language delays.
Soroptimist
International of Arkansas City ($3,000) The Sock Plus Project has
been funded by the Soroptimist and the generosity of Power of the Purse for
several years. The project provides socks, undergarments, and sweat pants
for Pre-K through 5th grade students.
Power
