Mehl to Present at Winfield Public Library

Winfield Public Library will host “A Greener Way to Grow,” a presentation and discussion by Dr. Heidi Mehl on Tuesday, August 30 at 12:00pm. This free event is open to the public. Registration is currently open through the online events calendar at wpl.org.

Dr. Heidi Mehl is the director of Water and Agriculture Programs at The Nature Conservancy in Kansas. Her talk will explore regenerative agriculture practices and how The Nature Conservancy is partnering with farmers and ranchers to improve agricultural resiliency, water quality, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.

“Integrating our agricultural practices with practices that improve soil health and filter nutrients can help provision ecosystem services such as clean water and habitat,” says Mehl. “But these practices can also make agricultural systems more productive and resilient.”

Mehl’s work with The Nature Conservancy is another example of exciting work being done in Kansas to address local, national, and global climate concerns. Agricultural resiliency and regenerative agricultural practices, such as those Mehl will highlight, were a feature of the “Climate and Energy Central” exhibit hosted at WPL this past spring. That traveling exhibit from the Kauffman Museum at Bethel College features Kansas scientists who are working together to address the grand challenges of renewable energy and potential climate change.

Mehl has been researching water issues in Kansas and abroad since her undergraduate years at the University of Kansas. After receiving her B.S. and M.A. from the University of Kansas, she received her Ph.D. from the Department of Geography at Kansas State University, with a focus on fluvial geomorphology, nutrient cycling in riparian zones, water management and access to water resources.
