Southwestern College will Present Two Virtual Events to Celebrate Black History Month

Winfield, Kan., Feb. 11, 2021 - Southwestern College is celebrating Black History Month with two virtual events.  There is no charge to view and everyone is invited to attend.
“The Black Student Experience” will be led by Anjaih Clemons-Williams ’11/’13, director of campus life, and Alissa Sheppard ’12/’20, student success advisor.  They will provide insight into the black student experience at SC, including topics on racial climate, resources, and support.  This event will air on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. and at 6 p.m.
“Unmarked But Not Forgotten: Remembering the ‘Firsts’” will air on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Dawn Pleas, vice president for retention and student success and leader of the Hope Tour, and junior Chloe Manley will commemorate the first African American graduates of Southwestern College, Elijah Pilgrim Geiger, 1899, and Helen Muriel Johnson, 1934, and discuss how their legacy lives on today.
