midnight on March 26. Winners were announced the following day and posted on
the website. While entry was free, voters were asked to contribute $1 for a
single vote, $5 for 5 votes, or $10 for 10 votes, with proceeds going to
support the Marquee and Winfield Arts and Humanities Council. All entries are
still up on the Marquee website, at marqueepac.org.
The
Marquee has invited all participants to a gathering held jointly with Gallery
1001 this Friday, April 2, 5-7pm. Gallery 1001 will be displaying the work of
winners in the visual arts, as part of its Friday Art Walk. The Marquee will
invite winners in the performing arts to perform in its lobby. All winners, in
both performing and visual arts, will be recognized and awarded their prizes in
the Marquee lobby at 6pm. Both events are open to the public.
Marquee
Board President Roger Moon: “We want to thank all of those who took part,
whether they won, entered, or took part in the voting, as well as the art
teachers and other community members who helped us to get out word of the
contest. There were 21 people who submitted entries, and many of them took
advantage of the ability to submit multiple entries in different categories.
More than 1,100 votes were cast in total, which means over $1,100 was raised
for the Marquee and Winfield’s Arts and Humanities Council. More importantly,
though, we found that this was a way that folks could get involved in something
that safely showcased the talent and resources of our community. And I want to
thank also the area businesses who supported this effort with such wonderful
prizes.”
More
than $1000 was pledged as cash and prizes for the competition, with the
following area businesses contributing: Biederman’s Bistro, Bob’s Liquor, C&B
Liquor, College Hill Coffee, Eagle’s Nest, The Emporium, Field to Fabric,
Gallery 1001, Gold’s Nutrition, Graves Drug, Ken & Jan Hathaway, Health
Center Pharmacy, Home Lumber & Supply, Jarrett & Norton CPAs, Lucky
Star, El Maguey, Sonic, Timber Creek Floral, Trunk N Treasure, WB Meats, Walnut
Valley Dental, & Walnut Valley Festival.
The
mission of the Marquee Performing Arts Center is to create a dynamic cultural
hub in the heart of downtown Winfield for social, artistic, educational, and
business gatherings by restoring and transforming the historic Winfield Fox
Theater into a state-of-the-art facility that connects and serves the people of
Winfield and South-Central Kansas. The Winfield Arts & Humanities Council
works to provide the public with programs and events centered around the arts.
This includes providing new art each month in the WAHC galleries, organizing
Winfield's annual Art in the Park juried arts and crafts show, and organizing
the Kansas Voices contest for writers living in Kansas.
