Upcoming SC Student and Symphony
Performances
Winfield, Kan., April 11, 2023 — The Southwestern College music
department has several upcoming student and symphony performances before the
end of the spring semester.
- Sunday,
April 16 at 3 p.m., Messenger Recital Hall in Darbeth Fine Arts Center at
Southwestern College, free admission—Amber Peterson's private violin and
piano students, ranging in age from middle school to college, will be
performing. Highlights include the prelude from Bach's “Partita No. 3,”
Monti's Csardas, and the first movement of Vivaldi's “Spring.”
- Sunday,
April 23, at 3 p.m., Messenger Recital Hall in Darbeth Fine Arts Center at
Southwestern College, adults $5, children $2, free for SC faculty, staff,
and students—The Community Music School's Pre-College String Ensembles and
Southwestern College's Williams String Ensemble will present a recital of
chamber music. The groups will play a wide variety of music, ranging from
eclectic styles to a Strauss polka and Halvorsen's Passacaglia.
- Sunday,
April 30 at 3 p.m., Richardson Performing Arts Center, adults $10,
children $5, free for SC faculty, staff, and students—The South Kansas
Symphony will present their spring concert, “Voices of Spring,” sponsored by
Larry and Linda Hahn. The concert will feature the 2023 Concerto
Competition winners (sponsored by The Trust Company of Kansas - Stephen
English). Samuel Shook and Ryan Byun will perform movements of the
Sibelius and Mendelssohn violin concertos respectively. The symphony will
also perform “Voices of Spring” by Strauss and selections from “Kanza.”
Additionally, John Baker, oboist and board president for the symphony,
will present a pre-concert lecture on “Kanza” at 2 p.m.
- Saturday,
May 6, at 7 p.m., at Island Park in Winfield. To commemorate Winfield's
150th anniversary, the South Kansas Symphony will perform “Kanza,” with
narration by Larry Hatteburg. The community is invited to come support the
local musicians as they celebrate Winfield's history. There is no
admission charge to attend.
