POP awards $19,000 to local organizations

Cowley County, KS: Power of the Purse (POP) presented grants totaling $19,000 to six local nonprofit organizations in 2022. Power of the Purse is an organization of women who donate annually for a fund supporting projects to benefit women and children in our Cowley County community.

Organizations receiving support include Angels in the Attic, Cowley Cares Coalition, Eagle Nest Inc., Elevate Cowley County, Soroptimist International of Arkansas City, and Winfield Noon Kiwanis.

Angels in the Attic ($2,000). Warm Coats/Happy Hearts. Families meet with a representative of Angels in the Attic at the new Outreach Center for coats and other winter wear. Recipients will be school children that meet income guidelines as well as families in crisis.

Cowley Cares Coalition Fund ($5,000) was created to assist single mothers who are actively working to improve their lives and the lives of their children. Research shows caring for a mother reflects care to the children, families and ultimately improves entire communities. The Cowley Cares Coalition assistance encourages participants to be self-sufficient and productive members of the community. Eagle Nest, Inc. while working in cooperation with other local agencies administers the fund.

Eagle Nest Inc. ($3,463) (ENI) Hybrid Workshops. ENI has played a key role in the transformation in the lives of women and families throughout the Cowley County community for 21 years. Our most effective method in supporting families is through our F.L.I.T.E. "Find Oneself- Lead- Initiate -Train - Excel" program. These funds will help adapt F.L.I.T.E. programming for remote access, as well as the purchase of laptops/tablets so individuals who have barriers to attending in person can participate in training.

Elevate Cowley County ($3,000) This project continues the work of helping families overcome poverty. The funding will help provide an opportunity for Leaders to become more stable financially and emotionally secure by providing financial literacy and education, setting goals and making budgets, and the support of long-term, intentional, positive and encouraging relationships. Elevate operates using a whole family approach, and meet weekly with dinner and childcare provided.

Soroptimist International of Arkansas City ($3,000) The Sock Plus Project has been funded by the Soroptimist and the generosity of Power of the Purse for several years. The project provides socks, undergarments, and sweat pants for Pre-K through 8th grade students.

Winfield Noon Kiwanis ($2,757) S.O.S. (Student Opportunity Services) is designed to provide two key services to students in USD465. The first is to ensure all Winfield Early Learning Students have milk for their mid-day snack. The second key service is to provide the USD465 counselors and social workers with healthy snacks to utilize when dealing with students in crisis.

Power of the Purse was established with Legacy Regional Community Foundation in 2007. Since inception, POP members have given a grand total of $289,000 in grants and scholarships in Cowley County. POP operates by combining membership contributions into a pool of funds to award grants and scholarships serving their mission to better the lives of women and children.
