COVID-19 Weekly Update

As of Friday, February 12th, we are altering our daily morning COVID-19 testing drive through schedule at the Cowley County Fairgrounds. The drive through testing is being suspended because of the dangerous cold conditions.  “I will not risk the health of my employees placing them in an unheated facility in single digit weather”, said Tom Langer, administrator of the City-Cowley County Health Department.  “We will be testing by appointment only through next week”.  Those people in need of a COVID-19 test should call the City-Cowley County Health Department’s Winfield office to schedule an appointment (620-221-1430).

COVID-19 illness numbers are currently trending lower in Cowley County.  We encourage everyone to continue observing the safeguards for preventing illness spread (mask, distance, hygiene, stay home if ill, and get vaccinated when it’s your turn).

Cowley County is in Phase 2 of the COVID-19 Vaccine distribution plan.  (see attachment above from the state).

The supply of COVID-19 vaccine to the county is slowly increasing - it appears that a total of 1300 “prime” (first) doses will arrive next week; 700 of those to local pharmacies, 600 to health care and public health facilities.

It will be allocated as follows:

WalMart Pharmacy Winfield - 200 doses (direct ship from the government)
WalMart Pharmacy Arkansas City - 200 doses (direct ship from the government)
Graves Drug - Winfield - 100 doses (direct ship from the government)
Graves Drug - Arkansas City - 100 doses (direct ship from the government)
Health Center Pharmacy - Winfield 100 doses (direct ship from the government)

Cowley County Public Health Allocation (600 doses sent to the Health Department and then distributed through providers):
William Newton Hospital - 100 doses
South Central Kansas Medical Center - 100 doses
Community Health Center - 100 doses
Winfield Family Care Center - 100 doses
Health Department - 200 doses

Each organization listed is creating appointments for vaccination for Phase 2 eligible residents. Contact the providers listed directly for details about how to schedule an appointment with them.

The Health Department continues to experience high demand for the vaccines. Our standby list currently contains over 2000 names.

We understand the desire by people in our County to be vaccinated and we are working as quickly as we can to help get you vaccinated.  If we had more vaccine, we would be vaccinating more people.  Please continue to be patient we are doing everything we can to get you vaccinated as soon as possible.
