Winfield Public Library Partners with WHS Renaissance for Cinema & Conversation

The Winfield Public Library, in partnership with the Winfield High School Renaissance committee, is hosting the 7th annual MLK Jr. Day Observance "Cinema & Conversation" on January 28 at 1:20 pm, free of charge and open to the public.

Cinema & Conversation provides an opportunity to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr through enriching discussions on the topic of civil rights in multi-generational conversations. The selected movie for 2022 is Just Mercy. Community members are invited to independently view the movie, which is available to stream on Amazon Prime and Hulu or to check out at WPL’s circulation desk. On Friday, Jan 28 from 1:20 to 2:00 pm, intergenerational round table discussions about the film will be hosted remotely.

Kris Trimmer, a former WHS teacher and past participant of Cinema & Conversation events, says the yearly tradition is a wonderful way to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. “Through Cinema & Conversation, I have had the pleasure of watching students listen to a community member who marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. I have heard adults share first-hand accounts about what race relations were like during the 40s and 50s in Winfield, and heard students open up about their own ideas and experiences. This event provides the opportunity for different generations to listen to and learn from each other, to actually communicate.”

Please join in this community conversation by (1) registering at the wpl.org community events calendar or by phone at (620) 221-4470; (2) watching the movie Just Mercy (available to stream or check out at WPL); (3) participating in the virtual roundtable discussions. Details for the discussions will be sent electronically to those who have registered.
