Duck Jam in the Park: Jacob Tovar

Duck Jam in the Park: Jacob Tovar

Jacob Tovar, a roots country honkytonker and crooner from Tulsa, will take the stage with opening support from fellow Oklahoman and folk-Americana phenom, Ken Pomeroy.

Jacob Tovar, Roots Country is an Oklahoma-grown musician bringing country music back to its roots! His distinctive crooning honkytonk vocals weave Americana, Folk, and Old School Country styles together to enchant and haunt, all within the same verse, in this “Roots Country” style of his own. Jacob sings impactful country classics and writes and performs his own sincere songs, with which everyone can relate. He is Tulsa-based today, but Jacob grew up in Western Oklahoma working with his family's business and appreciating many walks of life through a wide-open country lens. Since his debut album entitled “Jacob Tovar and the Saddle Tramps”, he has been spreading the Roots Country genre around sharing bills with the likes of: Chris Stapleton, Junior Brown, Sturgill Simpson, Wayne the Train Hancock, Corb Lund, Hot Club of Cowtown, Paul Benjaman, John Fullbright, and many other Tulsa icons and legends!

Ken is a 16 year old singer/songwriter with a Folk Americana sound. Transcending her age, Ken has a unique vocal quality that blends smoothly with her heartfelt lyrics. Ken began singing, writing songs, and playing the Baritone ukulele at age 9. She quickly learned to play the Concert and Soprano Ukulele, and at age 10 began playing guitar. In 2018 Ken opened for the legendary Wanda Jackson at the Oklahoma Rodeo Centennial Opry. Just recently in 2018, Ken won the 1st Annual Jimmy LaFave Songwriting Contest in Stillwater, Oklahoma at Willie's Saloon. She shared the stage with Stoney LaRue and Bo Phillips at the Bob Childers Gypsy Cafe Event benefiting the Red Dirt Relief Fund in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Every year she is a regular at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival playing Lou’s Rocky Road Tavern stage, and The Hen House at the festival. Fans can also catch Ken playing numerous venues around Oklahoma City and Norman on a regular basis. Sundays is a favorite to catch Ken and many other talented songwriters at JJ's Alley downtown OKC. She has played the Grand Stage at the Riverwind Casino, and she is also a regular at the Oklahoma Rodeo Opry. In January of 2018 she played the first Mile 0 Fest music festival in Key West, Florida and she will be returning to the Fest in January of 2019. Ken was also featured on The Oklahoma Room 2018 compilation CD and attended Folk Alliance International in February of 2018. You can purchase that CD or download the music on the album produced by Horton Records. Available on Bandcamp. In 2016, Ken received the Rising Star award from the Songwriters Association of Norman, and has attended the Rock & Roll Camp for Girls since it's inception in 2015. Ken released her debut EP “Minutes to Hours” in 2017. Ken has just completed her 2nd album "HALLWAYS".

Ken's musical influences include such local talent as Kyle Reid, Carter Sampson and John Calvin Abney. She is also influenced by the music of John Moreland and by classic artists like John Denver & James Taylor.

Duck Jam in the Park: Handmade Moments

Duck Jam in the Park: Handmade Moments
One Way Traffic opening at 6:00 PM.

Handmade Moments - Ornate instrumentation details the bedrock of their simple yet sophisticated songcraft, and endearing, intoxicating personality. Handmade Moments’ piercing lyricism and carousing croon both tell their own inspirational tale, and encompass larger themes that resonate within us all. This musical document unveils a myriad of tones, from walking upright bass to silky saxophone; it embodies an intelligent, progressive culture and celebrates a simple way of life.  “Fighting a Mountain” imagines a friend stranded in raging waters, but you are unable to help, restrained by physical barriers. The title track envisions a post-apocalyptic world with desert farms, a pointed statement against input-reliant agriculture and rallying cry to restore the ecosystem. “Junkie” is not your typical lover’s lament, and uses muse and real life metaphor to emphasize emotions that know no bounds, until they are no more. Paw Paw Tree is filled with lyrical life lessons, statements on the state the union, and examinations of those fragile, human elements that define each and every one of us.

One Way Traffic is a St. Louis-based band with an eclectic sound fueled by bluegrass, Americana, folk and blues. The band is driven by musicians Leah Osborne (vocals/baritone ukulele/washboard), Drew Lance (percussion/vocals), Erik Ferguson (bass), Sam Avery (guitar/vocals) and Sam Aubuchon (mandolin).

One Way Traffic has picked up speed quickly and forcefully. Shortly after releasing their debut album, Turn Right, in July 2019, the band competed in and won the 2019 Northwest String Summit Band Competition.

All members are songwriters aiming to keep it fresh and share their experiences with listeners through a unique approach and an honest delivery. One Way Traffic is made up of seasoned musicians that are hungry, young, and genuinely enjoy working together -- and it shows in live performances. What gives the band an undeniable edge is their outlook on making music: they strive to connect.

This concert will be the second concert of the Island Park Productions 2020 Concert Series in Island Park. These events are free and open to the public thanks to the generosity of community sponsors.

Duck Jam in the Park: Josh Hoyer and Soul Colossal

Duck Jam in the Park: Josh Hoyer and Soul Colossal
Jeremy Spring of Crusoe & Abandon Kansas opening at 6:00 PM.

Night after night at their live shows, Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal leave it all on the table, bringing crowds palpably authentic music. This is a real working band; music for the people, by the people. You hear the veracity in Hoyer’s voice. You hear the strife of a guitar amp being pushed to its limits. You hear keyboards hammering notes home while emboldened horns soar over the top of a rhythm section akin to a freight train. The raucous funk and smooth soul emanating from the stage dutifully pays homage to the past soul giants while simultaneously charging forward, piloting themselves into the modern era. This is soul music.

Hoyer formed Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal in 2012 in famed blues town Lincoln, Nebraska. The award-winning five-piece band includes some of the area's most revered and accomplished musicians. Joining Hoyer (keyboards/vocals) is Blake DeForest (trumpet), Mike Keeling (bass), Benjamin Kushner (guitar), and Harrison ElDorado (drums). Inspired by the sounds of Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals, New Orleans, Philly and San Francisco, the band continuously crosses musical boundaries both in style and era, and joins forces each show with a common goal - to have the crowd dancing so much they forget even their smallest troubles.

On January 18th, 2019, Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal released Do It Now, their fourth full length studio album. The album was recorded at Silver Street in Ashland, NE and at Make Believe Studios in Omaha, NE. Upon its initial European release in August 2018, the album drew rave reviews from European publications with Blues Magazine stating, “Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal still prove to be at the top of the contemporary soul movement.” The band promoted the album on their second European tour; a 37-city outing spanning 6 different countries. Do It Now is available on vinyl, CD and all streaming platforms.

Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal hit the road again in 2018 as they traveled to over 25 states and played numerous festivals across the United States. On January 26th, 2018, Hoyer released The End of the Night, a 3-song EP and solo side project with veteran Nashville songwriters Jay Knowles (Harry Connick Jr, Blake Shelton), and Jon Coleman (Trace Adkins).

In 2017, Josh was featured as a contestant on NBC's The Voice, and the band completed their first European tour; a 27-city stint capped with a live album release from their show in Brussels, Belgium. The hard working band completed several national tours from 2015-2017, playing more than 150 shows in 32 states each year, including opening for George Clinton, Charles Bradley, Booker T Jones, and Muscle Shoals Revue.

In 2016, the magic of their live show caught the attention of producer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), who joined with the band to record their third full-length album. Running From Love, was recorded at Nashville's historic Sound Emporium, and once again features Hoyer's trademark vocals and the band's signature groove. The album was released on April 8, 2016, on Silver Street Records, and is available on vinyl, CD, and all streaming platforms.

"If James Brown and Otis Redding had a love child, it would be Josh Hoyer. The Lincoln, Nebraska, soul shouter, and his band of merry soulsters, Soul Colossal, deliver a sound so big, so funky, so wring-the-sweat-out-of-you energetic that it reaches through the speakers and shakes you until you start moving to its groove." - No Depression
