SC Theater Department presents "Eagerheart"

SC Theater Department presents "Eagerheart"
A unique tradition of the Campus Players is the annual production of the Christmas morality play, Eagerheart. In 1933, President Kirk asked Miss Graham to direct some Christmas play for the final chapel before Christmas vacation. She remembered a morality play in which she had appeared while in high school about the turn of the century (i.e., circa 1900). In her files she found her script of Eagerhert by A.M. Buckton.

Copies were made and the play was produced. Dr Kirk was so pleased that he asked for a repeat performance the next year. The play has been performed every year since at the final chapel before Christmas. Recently, the show has grown such that it is given as a gift to the Southwestern community and performed four times.

Traditionally, all of the roles are taken by Campus Players. Two senior girls and two faculty or staff members are chosen by the members of Campus Players to play the role of the Honored Maiden, or Mary. The women are selected based on their contributions to campus life and their personifications of the Christian values of Eagerheart. The identity of the Honored Maiden is never revealed until the adoration tableau at...  More >>

13th Annual Christmas Jazz Concert

13th Annual Christmas Jazz Concert
It's that time again! The 13th annual Christmas Jazz concert takes place at College Hill Coffee in Winfield on Friday, Dec. 13. A number of the area's finest musicians will be taking part in this longstanding local holiday tradition. The Student Loans are one of the most popular groups in the area. Originally the Southwestern College jazz combo, they have been bringing their swinging Sinatra-ish sounds to south central Kansas since 2010. The Scott Williams Quartet features Brad and Lane Turgeon. Trumpeter Brad Turgeon attended the Berklee College of music at the same time as pianist Scott Williams, but the two didn't meet until years later in Winfield. Lane Turgeon is a well known bassist on the Wichita scene, and works as an instrument repairman at one of the Wichita music stores. Wellington's The Lough Brothers, despite their youth, are experienced performers. They have appeared in Winfield many times. College Hill Coffee has a wide selection of delicious food and drinks, so you won't want to miss out. This is a well-attended event, so you will want to come early to get a good seat. Closed circuit TV will be provided, so everyone can get a good view of the...  More >>

“The Dockum Drugstore Sit-In" presentation by Prisca Barnes

“The Dockum Drugstore Sit-In" presentation by Prisca Barnes
Winfield Public Library will host “The Dockum Drugstore Sit-In,” a presentation and discussion by Prisca Barnes on Sunday, January 19th at 2:30pm.  Members of the community are invited to attend this free program that is made possible by Humanities Kansas.

In July 1958, Black Students gathered at Wichita’s Dockum Drugstore to stage a peaceful protest against the unequal practice of segregation. Although this protest was not publicized in the newspapers in 1958, the students participating in the demonstration worked to gain access to public spaces, like movie theaters and restaurants. This presentation discusses the details of the sit-in, explores how these protests helped transform the struggle for racial equality, and considers contemporary non-violent protests.

Prisca Barnes is the founder of Storytime Village, Inc., a nonprofit organization in Wichita that promotes reading among low-income children and families. She is a passionate advocate for equity in education and literacy.

“The Dockum Sit-in was one of the first student-led lunch counter protests of the Civil Rights era and it happened here in Kansas,” said Barnes. “It important to revisit its circumstances particularly as we recognize the event’s anniversary.”

“The Dockum Drugstore Sit-In” is part of Humanities Kansas's Movement of Ideas Speakers Bureau, featuring...  More >>
