SC Campus Players present "Eagerheart"

Campus Players Annual Production of ‘Eagerheart’

to be Performed December 1 and 5

Winfield, Kan., Nov. 24, 2021 — Southwestern College’s 88th annual production of “Eagerheart” will be presented two times in December. Performances will be Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m., and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. in the Helen Graham Little Theatre located on the lower level of Christy Administration Building.  Admission is free with a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Winfield Food Pantry.

The Southwestern College theatre department and the Campus Players organization produce the show each year as a gift to the community.  The show returns this year after being postponed last year due to Covid-19.

“Eagerheart,” which was written by early 20th century English playwright A.M. Buckton, celebrates the legend that Christ and the Holy Family travel the earth each year, blessing one deserving home where they rest on Christmas Eve.   Eager Heart and sisters Eager Fame and Eager Sense, along with shepherds and kings of Power, Wisdom, and Love, reveal their understanding of Christ and His teachings.  The search for the Holy Family is tested by beggars seeking food and shelter.  The play challenges and inspires audiences to live with charity throughout the year.

Allyson Moon will direct this year’s presentation of “Eagerheart.”  Moon says that she is inspired by the talent and commitment to the “Eagerheart” tradition that the Campus Players alums bring to the show.  It is the current Campus Players that asked for the involvement of the alums.  Because it has been two years since the last production, the current students are learning a great deal from the alums involved.

“It is also lovely to be in the Helen Graham Little Theatre once again,” Moon says.  “The cast and crew love the intimacy with the audience as they share this story of giving and hope during the Christmas season.”

Playing the role of Eager Heart will be Arden Mouangdy.  Brooke Rowzee has been cast as Eager Sense and Alexis Miers as Eager Fame

The Beggar Man will be played by Liam Cunningham.  The kings will be played by Lael Porter, King of Power; Roger Moon, King of Wisdom; and Abram Rankin, King of Love. Jenny Bate and Seth Bate will play the role of the Old Shepherd. Other shepherds will be played by Emma Bate, John Badley, and Brett Leise.

Jamieson Campo and Carter Humphreys will play the role of the angels while the Angel of Death will be played by Maya Damron.

An uncredited but honored woman traditionally plays the role of the beggar woman who later is recognized as one the Holy Family, and infants of the community are cast as the beggars’ child taken in by Eager Heart.   A senior student will play the role at the chapel performance and a selected faculty or staff will play the Beggar Woman at the community performance.

Reservations for the shows can be made by calling (620) 221-7720 or (620) 229-6272.  Reservations may also be made by emailing boxoffice@sckans.edu

Bookn’ with Friends Selects The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax for January Book Talk

The Winfield Public Library invites community members to join the Bookn’ with Friends book talk on Monday, January 24th at 6:30pm. This month’s book selection is The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman. Participants must register for this discussion by visiting wpl.org or calling 620-221-4470. Copies of the book are currently available at WPL’s circulation desk.

Selected to meet the January 2022 Reading Challenge of “a First Book in a Series,” The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax was first published in 1966; an additional 13 books featuring the title character have been published since then. The book is 204 pages long, and has a 4 star rating on goodreads. From the publisher:

Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was a widow with grown children. She was tired of attending her Garden Club meetings. She wanted to do something good for her country. So, naturally, she became a CIA agent. She takes on a job in Mexico City. The assignment doesn’t sound dangerous at first, but then, as often happens, something goes wrong. Now our dear Mrs. Pollifax finds herself embroiled in quite a hot Cold War – and her country’s enemies find themselves entangled with one unbelievably feisty lady.

Bookn’ with Friends book talks are hosted by the Friends of the Winfield Public Library. This group supports library activities such as the Summer Reading Program and the Discovery exhibits. For those who believe in literacy programs, love the library and wish to support strong community, membership in The Friends is a great way to show support.

WAHC Dinner Auction Fundraiser

WAHC Dinner Auction Fundraiser

The Winfield Arts and Humanities Council annual Evening for the Arts fundraiser is almost here! Come to our Carnival, to bid on dining experiences and creative appetizer trays to support the programs and events put on by WAHC. The best part is, you can join this party either in-person or from the comfort of your own home; a link to the virtual auction will be posted the week prior to the event.  While we do not enforce mask mandates, we do ask that everyone, planning to attend the event in-person, be respectful and courteous to other people and their choices.  *Location and vaccination standards, for all dinner parties up for bid, are decided by the cook/host of the meal.   *The delivery date can be set for later in the year, but must be scheduled within a month after the auction.

This event is unique in that instead of auctioning items, we auction private dinners made by local patrons!

All money raised from our auction goes directly to the Winfield Arts & Humanities Council programs, including affordable art classes for the youth of Cowley County.

The mission of the Winfield Arts & Humanties Council is to provide all people with programs, opportunities, and knowledge to enrich their lives through the arts.
