E-Waste Recycling Event

The Green Team of Southwestern College will again collaborate with the City of Winfield for an e-waste recycling event from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Arkansas City/Winfield Recycling Center located at 7th Avenue and D Street in Strother Field. Use the east driveway to enter the recycling center building and exit out the west driveway after dropping off electronics. The Green Team will be accepting donations to help offset the cost of transporting electronics to the recycler.

“Recycling electronic devices is very important for our planet and our community,” says Jason Speegle, director of the Green Team at Southwestern College. “When electronics go to the landfill, they have the potential to leach hazardous toxins into our soil and drinking water. Recycling electronics ensures that they are disposed of safely and many of the components can be reused. During the past seven years, this event has collected and recycled over 100,000 pounds of obsolete electronic devices from the Winfield and Ark City communities.”

Businesses and individuals may bring items to the event. GON Recycling will collect the items and process them for recycling. GON Recycling guarantees 100 percent security on all hard drives and customer information. They...  More >>

Marquee Mirror Talent Show - Voting

Marquee Mirror: Virtual Talent Show for Cowley County Now Open for Voting

Marquee Performing Arts Center has announced that voting is now open for entries in its inaugural online talent show, called Marquee Mirror: A Virtual Talent Show for Cowley County. The online competition features videos and photos of entries, and allows viewers to vote for their favorite entries in visual and performing arts. Area businesses have contributed cash & prizes for the competition, which will feature categories for adults and youth (18 and below).

Entries were due by midnight on Friday, March 19, and voting will take place throughout the next week, closing at midnight on Friday, March 26. Winners will be announced on March 27 at 8:00pm. While there was no fee to enter the competition, voters will be asked to contribute $1 for a single vote, $5 for 5 votes, or $10 for 10 votes, with proceeds going to support the Marquee and Winfield Arts and Humanities Council. To vote, go to visit marqueepac.org/marqueemirrorvoting

Marquee Board President Roger Moon: “While there is a fee to vote, we do not see this event primarily as a fundraiser, which is why the cost of voting is set so low. The Marquee has organized live talent shows in the past, and they have generally been very popular. We thought that this was a way we could reach out to the community, and folks could get involved in something that showcases the talent and resources of our community at a time when getting together to watch a talent show is impossible. And I must say that area businesses were so very supportive when we approached them with the idea.”

More than $1000 has been pledged as cash and prizes for the competition, with the following area businesses contributing: Biederman’s Bistro, Bob’s Liquor, C&B Liquor, College Hill Coffee, Eagle’s Nest, The Emporium, Field to Fabric, Gallery 1001, Gold’s Nutrition, Graves Drug, Ken & Jan Hathaway, Health Center Pharmacy, Home Lumber & Supply, Jarrett & Norton CPAs, Lucky Star, El Maguey, Sonic, Timber Creek Floral, Trunk N Treasure, WB Meats, Walnut Valley Dental, & Walnut Valley Festival.

Marquee hosts Online Easter Concert

Marquee Performing Arts Center will present a special online Easter Concert this weekend featuring local praise group GASS and well-known western singer Barry Ward. The concert will be streamed beginning at 4pm Central on March 28, and will remain up on the website and accessible for streaming through April 4. There is no fee to watch the concert, but donations are certainly appreciated.
GASS is a praise and worship band based in Arkansas City, consisting of Greg Smyer, Andy Colcasure, Stan Boggs, and Suzie Knickerbocker. The band is often seen performing at area churches and functions, and they have been featured for many years at Walnut Valley Festival’s gospel concert early on Sunday, the last day of the annual music festival. While the performance was pre-recorded and there was no audience, GASS’s Easter concert marks the first appearance of a band in the auditorium of the Marquee in many years.
Barry Ward has also played at the Walnut Valley Festival, and has also been welcomed to many churches and places of worship in the area. A native of Southwest Kansas, Ward has been recognized as Male Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists, Male Performer of the...  More >>
